Hi Benny,
Have you had a go on the Rusty Happy Shovel? It looks like Rusty has replaced physical volume with planing area and I was wondering how it would compare to a shortboard or groveller.
Love watching your weekly reports on youtube, maybe this could make the list.
Cheers
Rod
Hi Rod,
Thanks very much for your question! I dig the look of the Happy Shovel – I’ll see if I can organise one with Rusty Australia.
Thank you for the tip!
Cheers,
Benny
If anyone has had a go on the Rusty Happy Shovel, please let Rod and me know what you think of it!
Hi Rod, I’m currently riding a 5’7 Rusty Happy Shovel. One of the first things you will likely notice is that the board has really foiled rails. Handling the board, I find the rails and rocker more like a short board than a groveler.
On the Rusty website, this board seems to be touted as a groveler for waves knee high and above. I think Knee high is optimistic. I’ve found grovelers from other manufacturers to be more “grovelly”. For me, the board really seems to light up when the waves are waist high or bigger with a bit of shape. It could be the fact that I’ve sized mine on the lower end of my volume scale. I’ve started to really treat my happy shovel more as a short board with a wide nose that lets me get into waves earlier than a traditional short board.
Up and riding the board rails, turns and performs essentially like a skateboard on a waves but being able to get into a wave early with the wider nose means setting a line is much easier than a traditional short board.
The board is a ton of fun to ride due to the ease of riding this board. I have found hat my Rasta Quad set works best on this board as far as fins go.
